The Many Advantages of Body Cameras
Sept. 22, 2020
Why Every Police Department and Sheriff's Office Needs Body Cameras- and How to Enforce Them
Body cameras force bigoted or bias officers to behave like gentleman and hold them accountable for their actions. Arguably, it is not training or public policy that gives us meaningful change in how law enforcement officers treat minority communities- but body cameras. In order to build accountability and trust with citizens, and establish a solid foundation of transparency with the public, all police departments and local sheriff's offices should employ the mandatory use of the latest body camera systems.
How Do We Enforce the Usage of Body Cameras?
One proposed solution is pay deductions and suspensions for failing to turn on body cameras. Every time an officer steps out of their vehicle- they should automatically turn their camera on. This protects both the accused and the officer. All other changes to body camera policy are simply rhetoric.
As criminal defense attorneys for the past 25 years, our firm has seen very few complaints of police brutality from police departments who wear and enforce body cameras. In the circumstances where police brutality has occurred, having the footage on camera allows the officer to be disciplined and removed.
